Welcome to my A2 Photography Project...
Brief
Finding a overall theme for my entire A2 year seemed almost impossible at the start of the course. The Summer Project had helped me to narrow down what I wanted to do marginally but I was still unsure. I knew before hand that my favourite style of photography was the type that had an atmospheric feel but I didn't think I could make a full years worth of work out of doing that since I couldn't place it to a specific genre. To give an example of the type of photographs I like taking I've placed some of my summer project photos and first year photos below as well as the link to my inspiration Pinterest board...

First Year
Summer Project
...In High School I took GCSE Drama and I loved being able to portray different people, come up with characters and make a script real. This is also the aspect of photography that I came to the conclusion I enjoyed the most. With this in mind I started thinking of ways I could make characters, stories, scripts, fictional things into a 'real life', visual, static photograph. I wasn't sure whether I should adapt a film or a piece of theatre or a book and it took a while to come to a decision but eventually I did. My favourite book is titled The Mara Dyer trilogy and is written by Michelle Hodkin, it embodies everything I love about photography in a book - atmospheric, detailed, thought provoking and dramatic. The images reading the book creates are strong and bold so using this as a basis for my A2 Project would create some really interesting and beautiful photographs if I could take them well. I have copied a brief synopsis of each book below...
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer
(Book no. 1) - Mara Dyer believes life can't get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there. It can. She believes there must be more to the accident she can't remember that killed her friends and left her strangely unharmed. There is. She doesn't believe that after everything she's been through, she can fall in love. She's wrong. |
The Evolution of Mara Dyer
(Book no.2) - The truth about Mara Dyer's dangerous and mysterious abilities continues to unravel in the New York Times bestselling sequel to the thrilling The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer. Mara Dyer once believed she could run from her past.She can't. She used to think her problems were all in her head. They aren't. She couldn't imagine that after everything she's been through, the boy she loves would still be keeping secrets. She's wrong. In this gripping sequel to The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, the truth evolves and choices prove deadly. What will become of Mara Dyer next? |
The Retribution of Mara Dyer
(Book no.3) - Mara Dyer wants to believe there's more to the lies she’s been told. There is. She doesn’t stop to think about where her quest for the truth might lead. She should. She never had to imagine how far she would go for vengeance. She will now. Loyalties are betrayed, guilt and innocence tangle, and fate and chance collide in this shocking conclusion to Mara Dyer’s story. |
...I am not yet sure whether I want to try and photograph scenes from all three books or just stick to the first one. Doing all three would be difficult because I'd have to find only a couple pivotal scenes from each book which may lead to confusion when looking at the shoots in chronological order. However, if I only do the first one then it might not show enough of the story or have as much contrast in the early ones and later ones as I would like.
It might be easier in terms of time to just do one book, especially since there is so much depth in each book, trying to depict all three in the short amount of time given is probably not possible, at least not if I want to do it well, which of course I do. I will still stick to the idea of picking a few important scenes, I will use some from early in the book, middle and end to be able to give a full picture of what happens to Mara.
In summary, my plan is to create visuals in chronological order depicting the book 'The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer' by Michelle Hodkin. I will use FX makeup, normal make up, clothing, settings and other things to create the emotions and story of each scene I decide to create.
Here is a mood board of the aesthetics I have for this theme;
